Huge crab in driftnet at Pulau Semakau (13 Nov 2012)

On a TeamSeagrass trip to Pulau Semakau we found a huge Mud crab (Scylla sp.) trapped in an abandoned driftnet. The crab was about 30cm wide! It was still very much alive.
We also saw and removed a small crab trap.

Fortunately, the abandoned driftnet was not very long. It was about 20m long and had entangled a young mangrove sapling.
Hazwani and I spent some time freeing the crab from the net. She also removed a small crab trap found among the mangrove trees.
Here's Mr Crab all cleared of net.
It's heartbreaking to see abandoned driftnets so regularly on Pulau Semakau.
